Alina Chandaraman, a brainy and anti-social fifteen-year-old Indian American discusses her intergenerational conflict with her immigrant parents, who threaten to take her back to India now that her father has lost his job as a Professor of Religion at a prestigious Atlanta university. She feels that her parents do not understand her and wishes that she could be in a sitcom instead of living in her own life, until one day she meets and falls for a boy who is the friend of her college-aged sister, a development that makes her even more frustrated at the prospect of having to leave her American home.
